With over 18 months out of action from the national setup due to injury, Tom Rogic’s return in the World Cup qualifier against Bangladesh should sit well with Australian fans.

Although there would be little to measure from the match with Bangladesh in terms of Rogic’s current ability, his return to the national scene has allowed Ange Postecoglou and the Socceroos coaching staff to revaluate Rogic’s current level within training sessions.

Starting in his preferred position at no.10 in a 4-4-2 diamond, Rogic wasted no time in rediscovering his best, netting after eight minutes and playing a key role in a 19th-minute own goal.

Rogic dazzled in a tight-quartered Bangladesh defence. His positioning within space as well as his passing and key through balls to the overlapping full-backs contributed considerably to the Australian attack. His technical skill was impressive dribbling past the Bangladesh defence with ease.

Rogic did his chances of retaining his place in the XI against Tajikistan no harm. His technical ability could be crucial in unlocking what is likely to be a deep-lying, sturdy defence in the central Asian nation.

Rogic’s return to national team set up should bode well for Australian supporters. The former Mariner has returned to the Celtic first team and has found impressive form with assists and goals. If he continues that trend without being impacted by injury, Rogic will add another attacking element for the Socceroos in the latter stages of World Cup qualifying.
