Manchester City summer signing Ilkay Gundogan has described his debut as “the perfect day” as his side got their Champions League campaign off to the perfect start with a 4-0 rout of Borussia Monchengladbach.

Gundogan came into the starting lineup after David Silva was withdrawn having been named in the original starting lineup on Tuesday, with the game postponed 24 hours due to torrential rain.

The German helped to set up Sergio Aguero and City’s second goal after he was brought down in the 18-yard box.

“It’s a perfect day for me, to wait such a long time, it’s brilliant to play and have a good first game,” Gundogan told BT Sport following the match.

“I tried to work hard and now I’m just looking forward to the next game. Of course it’s not easy after such a long time out.

“Four months of rehabilitation is made more difficult especially when you don’t have an opportunity to be tested, or even a friendly to practice.

“But I started from zero so to play for 80 minutes, and to play well I think, then I am very happy.”

City now sit second in their group behind Barcelona who thrashed Celtic 7-0 on Tuesday.

The Hoops are the Citizens’ next opponent in two weeks’ time.
