Mauricio Pochettino: Tottenham Hotspur lacked passion against Monaco

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has questioned his player’s hunger after they fell 2-1 to Monaco in their first game of the Champions League.

On a night when Spurs set a new attendance record, the French side spoiled the party thanks to goals from Bernardo Silva and Thomas Lemar before Toby Alderweireld pulled one back for the home side.

Many questions have been raised over the club’s decision to move their Champions League games to Wembley, but Pochettino refused to blame the change of venue for the result.

“It’s too good an excuse. Football is on the pitch, the grass,” he told a press conference.

“We showed a lack of passion a little bit today because we cannot concede these goals.

How Tottenham fans reacted to their 2-1 loss against Monaco

“That is how we spoke in the changing room. It’s a shame because it was a good chance to give the fans a very good victory.

“We were better than Monaco, but to win we need to show more and be more aggressive because we cannot concede the goals we conceded. I talk about passion, it’s to feel more.

“It was a fantastic opportunity for us. We fight a lot to get into the Champions League, so why not give more?

“We are talking from the start of the season that we need to improve and learn. We need to work, to show more hunger, we need to show a different image.”
