Surprise packet of the 2015 edition, Hume City are through to the round of 16 after a penalty shootout win over Marconi Stallions at ABD Stadium, Broadmeadows.

After Mirjan Pavlovic put Marconi ahead six minutes into stoppage time, Hume’s exit looked imminent, but Kym Harris’ 117th minute equaliser forced the tie to penalties from which the hosts progressed.

Here’s how the players rated on the night.

Hume City

Chris Oldfield – 6: A relatively quiet 120 minutes but came up big in the penalty shoot out.

Jeremy Walker – 6.5: His incredible stamina allowed him to attack the game for the reminder of the match after a slow start. Credited with the assist for Harris’ equaliser.

Ramazan Tavsancioglu – 6: A good performance. Excellent in the air, but was  undone by a moment of brilliance from Pavlovic for the goal.

Shane Rexhepi – 7.5: As cool as they come. Scored the decisive penalty in the shootout. His composure throughout was excellent, a player who makes defending look easy.

Erdeniz Yildiz – 4: He was tentative and turned the ball over often. Substituted in extra time after suffering what looked to be a groin injury.

Daniel Clark – 6: Played the defensive midfield role. He was strong in the air using his height to advantage whilst balancing the team with his recycling of possession. Had to be substituted due to fatigue after 105 minutes of play.

Kristian Trajceski – 7: Still learning his craft yet has the special eye for the killer ball and his technical ability was superb throughout. Substituted in extra time.

Tom Cahill – 4: Minimal impact by his standards. Had a strong spell after half time but fatigued quickly. Took his penalty in the shootout with aplomb.

Nick Hegarty (C) – 6.5: The skipper led many attacks throughout the match. Will be disappointed with his finishing on the night missing two gilt edged chances.

Kym Harris – 7: Worked hard throughout and got the goal he deserved after a poor miss in the first half. Emphatic penalty in the shootout, too.

Theo Markelis – 5: Hit the post with a good strike but his output was minimal.

Substitutes

Hernan Espindola – 6: Looked dangerous when he came on in extra time. Provided excellent pace and a cool head.

Daniel Chabaani – 6: Brought onto the field as the team shifted to a back three to chase the equaliser. Did the required job, limited Marconi’s openings in midfield.

Sam Beninato – 6: Provided some dangerous crosses from the right and helped to cause uncertainty in the Marconi defence in the build up to Harris’ goal.

Marconi Stallions

Chad Taylor – 6.5: Made a number of saves to keep Marconi in the game. Aerially strong and he was unfortunate in the shootout diving the right way on a number of occasions.

Raimond Coletta – 7: Played superbly at right back he managed to keep Markelis out of the game. Was substituted in extra time due to injury which provided decisive to his teams chances.

Simon Valastro – 5.5: Contested the hard ball and made a number of clearances. Tried to remain composed on the ball but with limited midfield support he became ineffective.

Peter Pelekanos – 6: Worked hard by Hume and did not distribute the ball well. Did a good job marking Harris but was caught out in extra time.

Christopher Nunes (C) – 7.5: Classy performer on the night. Great battle with Hegarty, who was forced to switch wings. Outstanding, potentially goal-saving tackle in the 94th minute.

Brandon Vella – 3: Poor ball use and minimal involvement throughout.

Steven Drewery – 6: The best of three central midfielders for Marconi. The workhorse maintained pressure on the ball and the successful attacks started through him on the night. Lacked support.

Marko Jesic – 3: With minimal work rate and poor distribution it was not a good night for one of Marconi’s regulars. The game plan didn’t help but his lack of adaptability gave the control of the midfield to Hume.

Mirjan Pavlovic – 6.5: Superb goal, but his work rate was lacking and caught offside too often. Skied the first penalty in the shootout putting his team firmly on the back foot.

Sam Perre – 3: Limited involvement on the play with minimal touches of the ball. Went missing.

Sean Rooney – 4.5: Worked harder than Pavlovic but did not receive the midfield support to maximise his impact. Did have moments where he looked dangerous but was well contained.

Substitutes

Christopher Godoy Bascur – 1: Came on a minute or so before Hume’s equaliser. Took a penalty which was saved all whilst wearing a skivvy.

Noah Chianese – 4: Worked hard to be involved in the match getting on the ball much more then Perre. Was quite slow out on the right hand wing though and looked rather tired after only 20 minutes.

Bright Appiah – 2: Disaster. Beaten on several occasions in one on one situations and was weak in the air. Put no pressure on Walker’s cross for the equaliser.
