Slow start costs the Blues
With the spirits just beginning to pick up around the camp many pundits were expecting Chelsea to get off to a fast start at St James’, yet for another week the team was nowhere close to top gear. Perhaps thrown off-guard with the bravery of an opposition that were such heavy underdogs, Mourinho’s men started to fall into the same patterns that had led to such poor results in the opening weeks of the season. Exploring to high up in the field, the defensive line was unfocused and let numerous through balls past for Mitrovic, who eventually found the target late in the first-half.
Although controlling more of the possession and creating a couple of chances for Remy following the restart, a lapse in concentration left Wijanldum open inside the 18-yard box to nod home the second, which looked to put the final touches on another shock defeat until the last-minute turnaround.
