Mourinho’s switch pays-off late
A far from champion-like first-half showing against a 19th place Newcastle required some personnel changes from the ‘Special One’, who introduced Willian and Radamel Falcao immediately after going 2-0 down. These added options helped to a degree, but the majority of the credit must go to Ramires, who made the ball entirely his own after coming-on in the 73rd minute. Apart from his devastating strike which crashed into the top corner, the Brazilian had two further attempts and the fresh legs brought a demoralised Chelsea back into the game.
With both of Chelsea’s goal’s needing to come from substitutes, it is indicative that opposition defences have almost figured out the once-successful strategies of Hazard and Fabregas. But it also speaks to the level of depth in the squad and the ability of Mourinho to adapt during a poor performance.
