Mourinho’s tactics cost Chelsea

The bus has crashed and burned this term as the likes of Everton, West Ham United and Southampton have torched the Blues brigade, so it was a surprise that Mourinho’s side sat deep and tried to defend its lead against a Liverpool side that was lacking cohesion in the first-half.

Ultimately it cost Chelsea. Each of the Reds’ goals came about because they were given acres of space and time and regardless of the Merseysiders’ scoring frailties, you cannot afford to give the likes of Coutinho, Benteke and Firmino that sort of terrain.

During both of the Brazilian’s goals, the majority of the Londoners were inside the box waiting to react on what Coutinho did, rather than trying defuse the magician’s trickery. Late in the match, Benteke would collect the ball inside the box with Terry and Gary Cahill labouring a few metres away from the Belgian and the former Aston Villa forward took the opportunity with a tidy finish.

When Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona introduced the ‘tiki takka’ style to the La Liga and European competitions, many clubs struggled to combat the Catalan’s patient passing, however, a couple years on, everyone caught up and began to disrupt the Spanish giant’s progress. Chelsea suffocated Premier League outfits last season with a tight defensive grip, but it obvious this time round England has responded and it is time for Mourinho to open up his book of tricks and conjure up something fresh, before Roman Abramovich closes it.
