Everton miss golden opportunity

The 4-0 thrashing of Aston Villa was supposedly the beginning of Everton’s leanest period of the season, at least in terms of opposition. Most of their forthcoming opponents, including Bournemouth, sit in lowly positions on the table, so it is a terrific opportunity for Martinez’s team to make some gains in the way of the table.

When the Toffees established a two-goal advantage before half time, the points appeared safe, only for Howe’s men to rally. When Barkley put his team back in front with seconds remaining, the win again looked in no doubt, for good this time.

But Bournemouth rallied one last time and levelled seconds later. They deserve all the plaudits in the world for battling on, but the concession was unacceptable from Everton’s point of view. This match goes down as a blown chance and two points lost for the Merseysiders.
