Melbourne Victory has announced veteran A-League goalkeeper Danny Vukovic has been released from his club contract.

The 31-year-old signed with Kevin Muscat’s side in June of last year, where his expertise between the posts was again on display in 2015-16.  However, he would spend the latter stages of the season watching from the sidelines as Lawrence Thomas took over the first-choice mantle.

“This was a very difficult decision for me to make, because I thoroughly enjoyed the time I had at Melbourne Victory last season,” said Vukovic.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to represent Victory and I would like to thank everyone at the club and the fans, who have given me unbelievable support.

Only one season into what was a three-year deal, the man affectionately known as ‘Vuck’ was granted a release from his contract in order to best take take of personal issues closer to home.

“Last season was very difficult off the field for me and my family, and the best decision for us at this time is to be closer to our extended family in Sydney,” said Vukovic.

“I wish Kevin and the players all the best for the upcoming season.”

A highly-regarded custodian with experience playing overseas and at a myriad of A-League clubs, further news regarding Vukovic’s future is expected soon.
