A six-goal thriller in Lyon saw Hungary and Portugal play out a 3-3 draw in arguably the match of the tournament thus far.

Hungary hit the front in the 19th minute, as Zoltan Gera spectacularly found the bottom corner with a shot from outside the box.

Fernando Santos’ side regrouped and equalised through Nani before half time.

After the interval, Hungarian captain Balazs Dzsudzsak’s free-kick snuck past Rui Patricio after deflecting off the wall but Portugal responded moments later through Cristiano Ronaldo, who produced an impressive back-heel flick to direct Joao Mario’s cross into the net.

Dzsudzsak grabbed a brace when he cut in from the right flank and saw his shot once again hit the net through a deflection. However, just eight minutes later Ronaldo had his second, powering a header home after a pinpoint cross.

Iceland scored a dramatic winner deep into injury time in an engrossing encounter to secure a passage to the last 16 and eliminate Austria.

The contest may not have lived up to the goalfest between Portugal and Hungary in the other Group F game, however both teams created numerous opportunities in an attacking and free-flowing match.

On 19 minutes, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson controlled a flick-on with aplomb before he shot a drive beneath Robert Almer from eight yards.

Before half time Aleksandar Dragovic struck the woodwork from the penalty spot, however after the break they did find a precious equaliser on the hour mark.

Substitute Alessandro Schopf struck a low fizzing shot after his driving and purposeful run into the area.

However, it was Iceland’s day when substitute Arnor Ingvi Traustason tapped in at the far post after a counter-attack to seal Austria’s fate and spark wild celebrations from the Icelandic section of the stadium.

An unbelievable 90 minutes in the domed stadium of Lille saw Ireland spring an upset over the group winners Italy.

Playing with the knowledge that only a win would be good enough to keep their Euro campaign alive, the Irish attacked the favoured Italian side and while they did not create a whole lot, they made it count with a 1-0 victory courtesy of Robbie Brady’s late goal.

Radja Nainggolan netted a late winner from distance to ensure his side’s passage to the Round of 16 and end Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s international career in defeat.

Belgium snatched a late winner against Ibrahimovic’s Sweden, courtesy of a terrific strike from the AS Roma midfielder, as they ran out 1-0 winners at the Allianz Riviera on Wednesday.

The Blågult’s captain – whose international career is now over – as well as Romelu Lukaku, both had goals ruled out for offside prior to Nainggolan’s late effort, and Sweden were made to pay for not taking their chances early on in the clash.
