Anthony Martial played both hero and villain as United fought back to earn a valuable 1-1 draw away in Moscow last night.

The young Frenchman was culpable for giving away a needless penalty early in the first-half, before he made amends with an exquisite diving header to level the score after 65 minutes.

Mission accomplished

Away trips in Russia are never easy. Even revisiting the site where United last lifted the Champions League trophy was nout going to ensure a smooth ride for the visitors, who have struggled on the road under Louis van Gaal.

At the start of the game the Red Devils would have happily left with a draw, so they can have no complaints with the result. The point keeps them in second spot in the group, tied with CSKA on four points each. PSV’s loss to Wolfsburg leaves them bottom of the group on three points, with the German club surging to a two-point lead on top of the group with six.

Progress is far from assured, but with two home games against PSV and CSKA to come, United should find a way out of this group into the last 16. Anything less would represent a disaster for Van Gaal and his men.
