The Ghanian international has also enjoyed spells at AC Milan, Real Madrid and Lyon over a decorated 16 year professional club career.

Essien has the potential to be recruited under the new FFA ‘guest marquee’ ruling, with Adelaide United, Melbourne Victory, Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers the only clubs with visa spots open.

The Adelaide-based newspaper is also reporting that Argentine striker Gonzalo Bergessio and Italian attacker Andrea Gasbarroni are also being presented to A-League clubs.
