Liverpool legend Ian Rush believes that even with the evident changes under Jurgen Klopp, the Reds are still off the pace for a Champions League position.

Klopp arrived at Anfield with a fine reputation after guiding Borussia Dortmund to two Bundesliga titles and a Champions League final in 2013. The quality of his tactics have been evident, taking Liverpool to two cup finals last year and an improvement in the playing stocks shows a sharp increase from the Brendan Rodgers tenure.

However, Rush believes the expensive signings made by the two Manchester powerhouses and Chelsea should see them as the dominant forces this season. With this in mind he says Klopp will bring consistency to the Reds, but a return to Europe’s premiere stage would be an added bonus for the Merseyside club.

“It’s the most interesting Premier League in a long time with a lot of new managers,” Rush told the Liverpool Echo.

“I was with them in preseason and they blow a bit hot and cold. They just need consistency and they’ve got the right manager to do that.

“For me, it would be a bonus if Liverpool finished in the top four. That’s the target.”
