A ground breaking night for Zagreb in the face of adversity
As the sayings goes, ‘good things come to those who wait’, indeed Zagreb fans and players alike have been waiting since the turn of the new millennium to see their side triumph in Europe’s premier club competition.
The club has been embroiled in recent off-field turmoil, when chairman Zdravko Mamic, and his brother Zoran, who is the current manager both charged with embezzlement, tax evasion and bribery after siphoning off money from some of the sides’ large transfer fees, notably from the sales of Luka Modric to Tottenham and Dejan Lovren to Lyon.
The pair are still controlling the club whilst out on bail, as this alleged scheme has left fans aggrieved and betrayed. Despite this tumultuous time, the players who took the field tonight were able let their football do the talking, as they have done for best part of over a year now.
The win tonight means Zagreb have now gone 42 matches unbeaten in all competitions after going through their previous Croatian league season unblemished. The result has breathed new life into what looked like a relatively straight forward group.
