The next Newcastle owners have to reconnect with fans

News filtered through during the week the FFA had made contact with two parties interested in running the Jets. One of those parties, Hawaiian businessman Jeff Von Schmauder, was in attendance at a Hunter Stadium lacking colour and atmosphere. Whoever buys the team will have some work to do off the field to re-engage the fanbase. The Jet’s last finals appearance was back in 2010 and unsurprisingly, their lack of success on the field has translated into the crowds dropping away. From 13, 388 per game in 2012/13 to 9, 734 this season (which is actually an increase on last year’s average attendance), the faithful fans have let their disappointment be known. Newcastle has traditionally been a sports-mad town and their history in the A-League proves the market is there, but the new owner (whoever they may be) must re-connect with the fans and ensure them good football will return to the Hunter Valley.
