More to come as the season progresses

While Kenny Lowe would find plenty of areas for improvement, the same would apply to Tony Walmsley. Both defences seemed vulnerable on the break, offering far too much space to their opposition at times. Finishing was also an issue for the players, and perhaps if the Mariners had been asked to score their two penalties as goals from open play instead they would have struggled.

There are good signs for both teams – the youthful exuberance of the Mariners will produce more consistent results from experience, while the new additions to the Glory will take a few more weeks to acclimatise to the competition and their new teammates.

Fabio Ferreira may have found the back of the net twice, but the Portugese winger was not quite as effective in the first half, meaning he only receives two votes from the match. His fellow winger Mitch Austin was the undoubted player of the match, making Josh Risdon – one of the league’s best right backs – look like an amateur. Liam Reddy also receives a point with a series of fine saves in the final minutes and not at fault for either goal.
