Italian coach Antonio Conte has spoke of his side’s togetherness during the aftermath of their stunning 2-0 win against Belgium in their opening match for Euro 2016.

In what was probably the match of the tournament to date, the Italians surprised Belgium who were heavy favourites heading into the tournament, with goals to Emanuele Giaccherini and Graziano Pelle.

Conte said he was proud of his team’s performance, but said they should not be satisfied after just one win.

“Tonight showed that nothing is written in football on paper, everything is decided on the pitch,” he said.

“We need to do the talking with deeds on the pitch rather than words. I’ve been saying so since the start, I’m not telling lies, this is a squad first and foremost of men.”

“I don’t think a single game can change people’s perception. That would mean those assessing earlier know nothing about football, I’m sorry to say.”

“The odds really were against us today but that’s what is great about football, that occasionally the odds can be overturned if you should desire, willingness, commitment and passion.”

The Italian maestro, who was a part of Italy’s 2000 European finals team, said he was pleased with the passion shown by all his players and even admitted his own emotions got the better of him.

During the celebrations for Giaccherini’s opener, Conte was left with a bloodied nose after the entire Italian bench swarmed in elation.

“I must not deny the fact I was very emotional today. Being head coach of the national side at the Euros is not an everyday experience,” he said.

“Much the same for the players, it’s unique to put on the national team colours.

“We all agree to give 100% to not go away with any ifs and buts. We’re all pulling in the same direction which is significant. The aim is to get as far as we deserve to be.

“I believe that supporters when they see 23 players giving their all on the pitch, players willing to spill their blood, sweat and tears, they really appreciate that regardless of what they have in talent.”
