Brisbane Roar opened up a one-point gap at the top of the table after an entertaining draw with Melbourne City at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night.

The intent from both sides was clear from kick-off with both goalkeepers tested a number of times in the opening 45 minutes. Aaron Mooy and Corona were on show with crisp passing as each side engaged in a back-and-forth battle. Jamie Young had an awful night by following up an embarrassing slip in his own box with a number of incredible saves as his opposite number Thomas Sorenson denied Brisbane’s in-form strike force. It was a thoroughly entertaining half even though both teams spurned golden chances to score.

The second half opened up immediately as Mooy jumped on an error from Young to crack a shot at goal which was rebounded into the direction of Novillo who made no mistake from a tight angle. It was not looking like Brisbane’s night as the usually outstanding Jamie Maclaren was dour in front of goal but a substitution from John Aloisi saw the newly-made Australian citizen Henrique turn Jacob Melling into mincemeat with an inspired goal. Neither team showed enough steel to grab the game by the scruff of the neck as it finished as a 1-1 draw.
