Returning Socceroos Tim Cahill and Brett Holman believe the national competition is headed in the right direction a week out from the beginning of season 12 of the A-League.

The pair spoke to media at AAMI Park today, lauding the A-League’s increased allure in its capacity to welcome back a host of overseas based Socceroos in recent years.

Holman noted the shift in attitudes when it comes to Australian footballers returning to ply their trade in the A-League.

“You’re talking about good quality players, national team players who are not choosing something else in that sense, but looking at the A-League and saying this is positive for my career,” he said.

“That is a massive compliment in that sense for the A-League to say this is how we’re progressing, and we’re doing it in a good way because we’re attracting these sort of players back to our league.

Cahill echoed the Brisbane Roar midfielder’s sentiments, saying he is happy to be on the verge of a new season on home soil.

“This is where we’re from. This is where we were brought up. To be finally home as international Australian players, it’s good for us, good for our families and obviously great for the game,”

“It’s going to be a good year. We’re all going to add our own flavour and uniqueness to each team, but it will all be for the right reasons.

“It’s great having Brett (Holman) back,” Cahill said.

Brisbane Roar begin their A-League campaign at home against Melbourne Victory next Friday night, while Melbourne City face Wellington Phoenix on the Saturday.
