Leicester City moved to the top of the English Premier League on Saturday with a convincing win away to the Magpies.

Claudio Ranieri’s men were dominant at St James’ Park, never looking in significant danger of dropping any points.

Newcastle were forced into an early substitution as Cheick Tiote suffered a groin injury after 20 minutes. Florian Thauvin – Tiote’s replacement – struggled to make any impression on the game.

Jamie Vardy scored on the stroke of half time, just reward for the manner in which the Foxes controlled proceedings. The goal saw the Englishman equal Ruud van Nistelrooy’s much talked about record – 10 consecutive games in which he has now scored.

Many were predicting a response from the home side after the break, but it never came as Leonardo Ulloa scored his first for the season, nodding home a Riyad Mahrez back-post delivery just after the hour. Shinji Okazaki came off the bench to put the cherry on top of what was a complete performance from the league leaders.

Furthermore, the Foxes kept their second clean sheet for the season, which will please the manager no end.

While the Foxes find themselves at the top of the league, the Toon are languishing in 17th place, significant concern for Steve McLaren.
