Will Mauricio Pochettino leave Tottenham Hotspur at the end of the season?

There have been arguments recently regarding Mauricio Pochettino’s place at Tottenham Hotspur and whether he will maintain in his position at White Hart Lane.

Some argue that he is bound to be poached by a bigger and ‘better’ club that needs help, for example Manchester United. Louis Van Gaal has failed to revive the Red Devils, who have wilted since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson. There have been multiple shouts of ‘out!’ for a while now, and it is looking more and more likely that he will either leave, or he will be fired.

Others believe that Pochettino would be positively stupid to leave Tottenham after what he has achieved there, and with a squad full of young players such as Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen (who did not originally fit in the Spurs side, but has since grown into a key player for them).

The Argentine has done wonders for Roy Hodgson and the English football team at the same time, giving young academy players the chance to prove their worth on a Premier League stage. The likes of Josh Onomah and Tom Carroll, who often come on as substitutes, are regularly given a run about to ease themselves into one of, if not the biggest, league in the world. Not to mention Kane, Alli, Danny Rose and Kyle Walker, who are regular starters in the side, and now also for England.

If Tottenham fight their way to a Premier League crown, there will be no doubt that Pochettino will be in-demand among other clubs. Spurs will be desperate for him to stay with what he has done at the club, and also continue on his way to build something great. It is one thing to win a title, but it is another to win multiple crowns and stay a dominant team. Tottenham are not a stranger to Champions League football, but after gracing the European stage back in 2010, the North London club fell off the ledge a little in terms of Premier League finishes.

There is also the more cynical argument of whether Spurs would dump Mauricio Pochettino should he not win the title. ‘You did a good job, but it wasn’t good enough’ style (though this is extremely unlikely). There is also the potential that Pochettino could go on to be one of the longest serving managers at a club. Though in this day and age that is becoming more and more of a rarity, as it is increasingly easy for managers and clubs to get out of contracts with a bit of money.

If Pochettino stays, which is most likely, will he be able to continue Spurs’ domination of the Premier League? Or is it just because the big clubs like Manchester United and Chelsea have not played their usual part at the top of the table? These questions will be asked come the end of the season, but now the biggest question on the tip of everyone’s tongue is, who will win?

Pochettino has a chance to build Tottenham into one of the best clubs in England, if they currently are not already, for at least the next few years. The Lilywhites need to keep this momentum, or they have the potential to do what Liverpool FC did when they finished second in the league – which is drop to the middle regions of the table. If the Spurs are anything like the Reds, they will take a few seasons to get back to where they once were.

If anything, Pochettino has managed to rocket Tottenham to the top of the table and out of the shadow of the ‘almost club’ title to the club with the title. Their story is different to that of Leicester City. The Foxes are more of fairytale, while the Lilywhites have been almost there for a very long time, especially back in the day where Gareth Bale was part of Harry Redknapp’s side.

It will be interesting to witness the final stages of the 2015-2016 season of course, but it will also be extremely intriguing to see the aftereffects of such a year. One would be confident that Pochettino will stay, but the Premier League has been crazy this season.
