Duncan Watmore has a big future

He is raw, he does run down blind alleys at times but his pace, enthusiasm and threat make him an outstanding prospect.

Watmore has really inspired Sunderland, given them a lift and could be their good news story of the season.

While Big Sam battens down the hatches, Watmore is the outlet and looks a very exciting one at that.

Olympiakos will not be frightened

Olympiakos’ scouts will have gone away understanding that with Arsenal, appearances can be deceptive. For much of this game, Wenger’s team did not suggest it was readily equipped to fulfil its unlikely Champions League mission this week. Needing to win by a convincing margin against the Greeks on Tuesday, the Gunners did not exactly fill their followers with confidence.

Stodgy, pedestrian, unable to break down the sickly green wall of defenders, for an hour this was the kind of performance that had the Emirates crowd wailing in frustration. But within this team lurks quality. And, to Wenger’s evident, leaping, fist-pumping relief, first through Giroud’s header, then Aaron Ramsey’s scrambled late show, they eventually did enough.
