Perth Glory a set pieces threat, Phoenix ineffective until the final minutes

In the first half, Perth proved too difficult to deal with at set pieces, scoring one and coming close on multiple occasions. Gyorgy Sandor’s finish through traffic in the eighth minute from their first corner opportunity was extremely well executed, and the Glory often got to the ball ahead of the Nix defenders, but they failed to convert their chances. The Phoenix, on the other hand, were wasteful with their dead ball attempts, with McGlinchey’s free kicks and corners often sailing high and wide, or not being attacked at all.

Krishna redeems himself

Despite missing a crucial penalty in the round one encounter with the Jets, coach Merrick gave the Fijian international a chance for redemption by starting him in the central-striker role in this game. Krishna rewarded his manager by clinically dispatching a Phoenix counter-attack, finishing with style after using his speed and strength to beat out Thwaite and finish into the side netting with a shot even the highly experienced Glory goalkeeper Ante Covic could not get a glove to. It was a solid performance, and he constantly caused the Glory defence problems, as he relished the opportunity to lead the line for his side.
