Newcastle United won their second consecutive match and inflicted Tottenham Hotspur’s first defeat since the opening day of the season with a 2-1 victory at White Hart Lane last night.

The visitors came into the match with a degree of confidence following their shock win over Liverpool last weekend, however, they struggled to trouble Mauricio Pochettino’s men in the first-half, with the hosts largely dominating proceedings. Spurs were rewarded for their superiority in the 39th minute, when a header from Eric Dier had too much power for Rob Elliot to keep out.

The Magpies came out of their shell in the second-half, and on 74 minutes Aleksandr Mitrovic poached an equaliser from close-range. The match seemed destined for a draw, before Ayoze Perez caught the Spurs defence off-guard and fired past Hugo Lloris, sparking mass celebrations among the traveling Newcastle fans.

Eric Dier looks at home in midfield

Eric Dier was signed at the beginning of last season as a central-defender who played a bit-part role. Starting this campaign, Pochettino decided to draft the 21-year-old slightly up the park into the centre of midfield. Some young players struggle to adapt to positional changes, but Dier is an exception and has taken to his new surroundings swimmingly. While the defeat is a crushing blow for Spurs, a third league goal of the season for the ever growing Dier will surely be one of, if not the only positive aspect to arise from this match.
