Genuine challengers
The best teams in world football do not have to win every game by five or six goals and PSG proved that. Despite the scoreline looking less than flattering against a side that will struggle to record any real impact in this seasons competition, PSG still dominated proceedings. Statistically a far better side, PSG’s 20 total shots compared to Malmö’s five shows just how comfortable a night it was. There will be a point in this competition where PSG will need to convert all chances into goals, going into games against Real Madrid and possibly, in the latter stages, against Bayern Munich and FC Barcelona. Every missed opportunity matters but in their first European game of the season, PSG look like real contenders.
Barring injuries to key players, Laurent Blanc’s team will leave a mark on the Champions League, maybe not by winning it, but they will have a say in who does.
