Manchester United show grit in Watford win

Manchester United eked out an important win at Watford on Saturday, sending a clear message to their title rivals. With their lunchtime win over the Hornets, United temporarily led the standings before Leicester City overtook them. After taking the lead through Memphis Depay’s well struck volley, it seemed like the Red Devils would succumb to a draw when Troy Deeney equalised from the penalty spot after Marcos Rojo had fouled Odhion Ighalo. However, Bastian Schweinsteger had other ideas, scoring a 90th-minute winner to snatch the three points. After losses for Manchester City and Arsenal, Louis van Gaal’s men are up to second. For all the criticism they receive, and justifiable criticism at that for being boring, there is no denying this team knows how to grind out results and win. That is the aim of the game after all.

Chelsea overcomes Norwich

After what has been a surprisingly quiet international break for Chelsea, the Blues got back to winning ways after three consecutive losses with a 1-0 win over Norwich. Although the scoreline suggests otherwise, Jose Mourinho’s men dominated from the start, putting on a performance reminiscent of one in the first half of last season. The likes of Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas were on song and Hazard in particular was in devastating form, linking particularly well with the Brazilian Kenedy who had an admirable debut at left-back. The sight of Diego Costa back on the scoresheet is only a bonus for Mourinho and with the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal slipping up, a winning run can get the Blues back in a position of familiarity.
