Melbourne City coach John van’t Schip says he is proud of the way his team dominated Brisbane Roar in the wake of their 3-1 victory on Friday night.

Initially the Roar went up 1-0, but in the second-half it was one-way traffic with three goals the other way. The equaliser was converted by Aaron Mooy from the spot, the penalty was awarded and Jack Hingert was shown a second yellow.

The Dutchman believed they could have got complacent with the extra man, but was content they iced the game.

“First-half we already had the better the chances, we dominated more, but they still could play quite easily,” Van’t Schip said.

“Coming up after that corner and the shot of Dimi Petratos we pushed a bit more not high or aggressive enough.

“I think in the second half we did that better, it resulted in more pressure in situations where we played more in there half.

“We got the penalty, before that, overall in that time in the second half, we were having those chances and luckily we did that well and got the penalty.

“Aaron put us next to them, when we played against 10, it was easier. It’s only easier if you do it well and I think we did it well by pressing and keeping them under pressure.”

It was a game of questionable refereeing by Kris Griffiths-Jones, arguably Brisbane should have finished with nine men on the park when Daniel Bowles went in for a dangerous tackle already on a yellow card.

Van’t Schip made comparisons to Anthony Caceres, who was given two yellows for similar challenges in the Melbourne Derby last month.

“I do think Bowles should have got a second yellow, Anthony Caceres got two second yellows for a lot less silly actions,” he said.

“For me, if you give a foul already having yellow it shouldn’t have been two. I think the consistency in that is not always there.

“Caceres gets booked twice for not even the same kind of situation and misses out and this for me was a clear second yellow.”
