Brisbane Roar coach John Aloisi was left scratching his head after the delay which took Tommy Oar to make his long awaited come back to the A-League.

The Roar ultimately fell 3-1 to Melbourne City on Friday night, however, when the game was still level, Oar was ready to come on, but it was unnoticed during the stoppages. In that time, City scored two goals in quick succession.

“We were trying to bring him on when it was 1-1 and there was a free kick and it didn’t happen. I’m not sure why,” Aloisi said.

“They played on quickly and I thought the referee would have seen we were trying to make a sub and they didn’t go through.

“I felt for Tommy a little bit too, because you’re coming on 1-1, still opportunities and we were catching them on the break.

“At least he got some minutes in his legs, he’ll be better for it.”

Aloisi questioned the officiating in the game once again, under the control of Kris Griffiths-Jones there were some contentious decisions, including a red card and perhaps another sending off which was not merited.

Daniel Bowles was booked for a fairly innocuous challenge on Harry Novillo in the first-half, however, a more cynical tackle in the latter stages was let off by Griffiths-Jones.

City trailed the game, but a penalty got them back into it early in the second-half. Jack Hingert then received his marching orders with a second yellow.

While Aloisi thought Hingerts penalty booking was fair, he should not have received an initial yellow to begin with, and the sending off ruined the game.

“I had a problem with the initial yellow cards, I thought they were really soft,” he said.

“They weren’t dangerous tackles or stopping counter attacks. It kills the game.

“It definitely changed the game, before that we were very comfortable, we didn’t really concede any chances before that moment.

“They were getting into areas but not really hurting us, being 1-0 up it changed the game.

“Then a Penalty and a man sent off, then after that we were trying to defend with 10 men, we did it well for quite a bit of time.

“We could have defended the second goal better and the other set piece finished off the game.”

Roar now have to turn their attention to Sydney FC at Suncorp stadium next week. The loss saw Brisbane fall from first on the table, with City rising to the top momentarily.
