Joel Campbell continues to come of age

Returning to an environment where he single-handedly destroyed Manchester United in a Champions League encounter back in 2014 while out on loan, Campbell finally seems to have found his niche in an Arsenal shirt.

Injuries have left Wenger no choice but to call on the Costa Rican to fill the void and with that a window of opportunity has presented itself – a chance that Campbell has been yearning for so long.

The 23-year-old netted on the weekend in the Gunners’ win over Sunderland and followed it up with his finest performance for the club since joining back in 2011.

Full of energy, verve and quality, Campbell was outstanding, displaying many deft touches, notably his smart drag-back that bamboozled the Olympiacos defence before sliding an incisive pass for Giroud to slot home the team’s all important second goal.

His willingness to fulfil his defensive duties was also evident. The decision to switch Campbell to the right was crucial in stopping the Greeks running riot down Arsenal’s right-hand side early in the match, providing Hector Bellerin with some much needed protection.

Campbell could very well be this year’s version of Francis Coquelin, a breakthrough season when all seemed lost. He now looks firmly at home and the belief continues to grow.
