Brisbane Roar claimed an important victory against Melbourne City in a fiery encounter at Suncorp Stadium.

The win sees John Aloisi’s side go just two points behind league leaders Western Sydney Wanderers, while City remain in third place four points adrift of Roar.

Both teams began the game brightly, but it was the home side who translated their possession into clear-cut scoring opportunities.

They took the lead through a slice of luck, when Shane Stefanutto’s cross was diverted into his own net by Melbourne City skipper Patrick Kisnorbo on 31 minutes.

And with just five minutes of the half of remaining Brandon Borello doubled their advantage from a close angle, with Thomas Sorenson probably feeling he could have done better.

The visitors needed to respond, and only minutes after the half time interval they do so in perfect fashion.

Harry Novillo headed the ball expertly into the path of an onrushing Bruno Fornaroli, who dribbled past Jamie Young and tapped into an empty net – that goal meant the Uruguayan’s became the fastest player to reach 10 A-League goals.

After a pulsating final 30 minutes, following a fracas in which two players from other side were booked, it was Henrique who put the icing on the cake with a goal from the halfway line after Sorenson was left exposed after committing forward for a corner.
