Amid all the hype and euphoria of the Wanderers’ epic 5-4 comeback victory over Brisbane, coach Tony Popovic was keen to keep the team’s feet firmly planted on the ground.

At the post match press conference, the Western Sydney coach remained circumspect on the dramatic events of the evening.

“When we got in control, we stayed calm and the players were excellent. The belief was there.”

Dutchman Romeo Castelen proved to be the match winner, scoring a hat-trick while terrorising opposition left-back Corey Brown all night.

“Romeo has not changed since day one. We’re delighted for him,” said Popovic

Asked how this result sits in the pantheon of great Wanderers games of the past, the coach replied, “I haven’t had time to think about history.”

“We can make our own piece of history next week.

“This football club is special. The fans will make a lot of noise next week. It is about our evolution as a football club.

“Who would have thought four years ago we would knock this (Pirtek) stadium down? I would have thought that would come later.”

But Popovic did understand how important this win was, if not even for this campaign, but for beyond.

“Now we’re back in the Asian Champions League (and) we want to be challenging for the title.”

In the pre-game notes, the manager said that the Wanderers are a club going places. If tonight’s performance and comeback is any guide, that prediction is spot on the money.
