Three key talking points – Western Sydney Wanderers vs Brisbane Roar

Outside90’s Breanna Holden takes a look at three vital aspects heading into tonight’s match between the Wanderers and Brisbane Roar.

Absence of the RBB

Of all the active fans expected to be absent this weekend, the loss of the RBB will undoubtedly have the most effect on the stands, players and outcome. After last week’s 30 minute-mark walkout on the Central Coast, coach Tony Popovic said their departure affected the intensity of the game as much as the atmosphere. With Western Sydney players accustomed to the rallying cries of their active supporters, the squad will certainly feel something is missing without their 12th man. While on the other hand, Brisbane will likely benefit from the lack of intimidating chants bellowing around Pirtek Stadium.

The McLaren-Borello relationship

After coming out of the blocks firing under John Aloisi the Roar have began to slow down, settling for two draws on the trot. While their dip in form does not fall on the shoulders of just one or two players, it has to be said the relationship formed between Brisbane’s attacking youngsters Brandon Borello and Jamie McLaren has gone flat since the opening rounds. Although McLaren found himself on the score sheet against the Jets last weekend, it was his first impact on since a 3-1 win over Adelaide, and certainly was not a typical performance from the forward. If Brisbane are to pick up another win at Parramatta this campaign, they will need to see the two back to their dynamic and exciting best.

How much have the Wanderers grown?

In the first meeting between the two this season, Brisbane made the most of Western Sydney’s frail defence to bag a 3-1 win – a frustrating result for the Wanderers who through Mitch Nichols had enough chances to pick up a win. Since then the side have finally found their rhythm, picking up five consecutive wins and surging up the ladder. However, Saturday night’s clash will be the first real test for the Wanderers, giving a glimpse of just how far the side can go this season. Should they get the job done comfortably against a fellow top class side it will be hard to argue Western Sydney are not a top four outfit.
