Wellington sent a statement to the rest of the A-League with a 2-0 win over the Melbourne Victory earlier this evening.

There was controversy from the opening whistle, as a goal resulting from a quickly taken free-kick was denied for the Phoenix early on. While the visitors had their chances, Ernie Merrick’s men would stamp their authority on the match after Roy Krishna pounced on a loosely-attempted interception from the Victory defence and took the ball around Danny Vukovic to slot home from a nearly impossible angle. Continuing to stem the influence of Melbourne’s key names, the hosts gained momentum and cemented their lead with a brilliant counter-attack ending in Roly Bonevacia forcing the ball over the line.

Although Kevin Muscat’s squad looked willing to fight their way back after the break and arguably could have had a penalty early on in the second-half, Wellington did a masterful job of keeping the ball away from the dangerous players and rode their way to a very memorable win.

Krishna’s goal received due praise after the match, while fans expressed their frustration with both the pitch and choice of kits.
