Another edition of the A-League’s showcase fixture is set to live up to reputation as Sydney FC hosts Melbourne Victory in the Big Blue tonight.

Sydney’s grand final redemption

Sydney FC’s 2014-15 grand final meltdown was certainly one of the lowest points in the club’s history; made all the worse as it was away to their oldest rivals Melbourne Victory. With Graham Arnold’s men now top of the table and the only remaining unbeaten side, the Sky Blues will run out confident and primed for redemption. While Arnold insisted the loss has not affected the players, last May’s meeting between the two will certainly add extra spice to the clash.

Melbourne’s depth tested by international duty

Commitments over the international break will certainly affect many A-League sides throughout the round, but Victory in particular will be feeling the pressure as they lose four players on top of three significant injuries. Although the likes of Besart Berisha and Gui Finkler will still be at the helm, the squad’s depth will certainly be tested, particularly in what will surely be a heated clash with Sydney– potentially resurfacing debate surround the A-League’s policy towards national duty.

Are we set for another Big Blue draw?

Meetings between Sydney and Melbourne have traditionally taken on a ‘NSW vs Victoria’ atmosphere, bringing out the best and worst in both sides and unfortunately a fair share of draws. Although Melbourne comprehensively outclassed the Sky Blues in their last meeting, Arnold’s side now boasts the best defence in the league and an innate ability to pull off results. Meanwhile, Kevin Muscat’s men have picked up where they left-off from last season – begging the question – will the home side get one back over Victory, will the visitors again punish their rivals, or are we headed for the fixture’s 18th draw?
