Three key talking points – Brisbane Roar vs Melbourne Victory

Brisbane look to move back to the top of the table, at least temporarily, when they host Melbourne Victory on Saturday night.

Can Brisbane build on last round’s win?

After suffering a crushing loss to Adelaide in round 22 it looked as though Brisbane’s chances of taking out another premiership were essentially over. However, last weekend the side showed the grit they’ve missed for large portions of this campaign as they pulled off an unexpected 3-2 win over long-standing league leaders Western Sydney. Given the quality they produced against the Wanderers, John Aloisi will be hoping his side can take the win in their stride and play with a similar confidence, instead of once again exhibiting the inconsistency that’s plagued them in the last two months.

Last time these two met

While the Roar head into the clash off the back of a huge win over Western Sydney, Victory run out at Suncorp Stadium with a significant upper hand in the head-to-head, having won as many of this fixture’s meetings in Queensland as the Roar themselves. This is as well as a comprehensive 4-0 win in their previous meeting this season. In that meeting the Roar were completely over powered by the Victory’s front third, while their own forwards put in a performance that underlined how one-sided Brisbane’s attack is. Although the Roar have an almost unchanged side from last week, they’ll need to ensure they present an equally dynamic performance or face another frustrating defeat to Kevin Muscat’s men.

Roar’s 12th man

Brisbane may not have had the most consistent season, but their form on home turf has been somewhat of a saving grace. With the Roar building a consistent home support since their incredible transformation under Ange Postecoglou, the Den has proven crucial to maintaining the side’s place among the top teams this campaign. Aloisi’s men are undefeated in their last three home games (picking up seven points) and have won a further nine of the their previous 12 games at Suncorp Stadium. With the 12th man at their side, the Roar will certainly feel as if they’re in with a chance at moving into top spot, and making amends for their crushing defeat to Victory earlier in the season.
