Rumours of Grzegorz Krychowiak’s potential move to Arsenal have been increasing this week after reports that the club sent scouts to the UEFA Super Cup to get a closer look at the midfielder. However, Does the Polish international have what it takes to succeed at the Emirates?

Krychowiak, 25, was a crucial player for Sevilla last season after joining the Spanish club from Ligue 1 side Reims in July 2014. The defensive midfielder made 47 appearances across all competitions for Unai Emery’s side in 2014-15 as they retained the Europa League trophy and finished fifth in La Liga.

Arsenal have been linked to a host of players like Krychowiak this transfer window, but thus far fans have watched moves for the likes of Sami Khedira, Morgan Schneiderlin and William Carvalho fall through. The 25-year-old reportedly has a release clause of £22m, slightly less than what Manchester United paid for Schneiderlin – who has not played in any European club competitions.

Compared to other defensive midfielders in La Liga, Krychowiak is undoubtedly a capable player, notching up an impressive 3.18 interceptions every 90 minutes. While he may have been outshone by Atletico’s Gabi in tackling, being on par with a player of Busquets’ standing enhances his credentials.

Despite not having the most impressive passing and attacking stats, these facets of the game are less important for Arsenal, who boast plenty of ball-playing midfielders and attacking fullbacks to make up for a defensive-minded midfielder.

When compared to some of the Premier League’s defensive midfielders, Krychowiak once again looks at home among the best, producing similar numbers to Coquelin, Schneiderlin and Nemanja Matic last season. They may be playing in different leagues, but the quality of football is roughly the same.

A key statistic to make note of is the high percentage of aerial duels won. At an imposing 186cm, the Polish international does possess a slight advantage over Coquelin (178cm) and adds much-needed presence to the defence on set pieces. Arsenal conceded 13 headed goals in the Premier League last season, only topped by relegated Burnley (17). Not only is Krychowiak strong in the air, but he can play in central defence if needed. This would give Wenger plenty of rotation options, or even just the ability to play an extra man at the back to protect leads in the final minutes.

The veteran has been angling for a release but is unwilling to do so without a significant payout of his contract. However, if Wenger has a ready-made Polish replacement, the Frenchman’s departure would no doubt be welcomed to clear up space on the roster and wage bill.
