Italian veteran continues Chievo’s horror form

Alberto Gilardino got Palermo back on the winners list for the first time in four weeks, netting a second-half goal to ensure the Gialloblu’s horror run of form continues.

After topping the Serie A table for the first two weeks of the season, Chievo have not managed a win in their last seven matches, four of these being losses. The results see the club rooted to fifteenth position on the table.

It was quite an even contest, however, the much discussed ‘christmas tree’ formation was the winning factor for Palermo, who ultimately took an important three points.

Fans boycott the Rome derby

When the Stadio Olimpico hosts the Rome derby, it can normally be compared to a cauldron of noise and colour, but this instalment had a very different feel.

In recent weeks both sets of supporters have protested extra barriers installed in front of their respective club’s ‘Curva’, also coming with an increased security presence. This can leave the already large stadium with a capacity of 73,000 looking quite empty when the main supporter base chooses not to attend.

The fans who chose to watch the match live were treated to a dominant display from Roma, the only dampener a suspected broken leg for Egyptian star Mohammed Salah.

Paolo Valeri kept busy in Sassuolo

In a match where it was vital Sassuolo take all three points at home and in the first outing back for reappointed Carpi manager Fabrizio Castori who was sacked only five matches prior, it was perhaps the referee who took centre-stage in rather unfortunate circumstances.

Paolo Valeri issued nine yellow cards during the match in Sassuolo, more than any other match so far this season. Not to say all cautions were not warranted, one would hope future matches see more flowing football.
