Romelu Luaku scored a 12-minute hat-trick as Everton demolished a sorry Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
After both teams cancelled each other out in the first half, it was Everton who broke the deadlock on the hour mark after a blistering counter-attack.
Idrissa Gueye’s well-weighted cross to the back post found Romelu Lakaku who headed in from close range with aplomb.
Everton doubled their advantage on 68 minutes through their Belgian striker in similar fashion with Yannick Bolasie’s driving run from the left ending in an inch-perfect cross to the back post that Lukaku simply could not miss.
And just three minutes later, Lukaku completed his rout of the Black Cats when an inventive piece of thinking from Kevin Mirallas set him through one-one-one with the goalkeeper and the powerful frontman made no mistake.
Sunderland fans headed for the exits, digusted by the capitluation of their team once they went behind. David Moyes has a big job on his hands and this heavy defeat serves as another timely reminder of just how difficult it will be to revitalise the side.
Here are some of the best reactions from Sunderland fans on Twitter after the loss:
Rodwell is poor. Every pass either just makes it and leaves the receiving player with a hospital ball or no ball at all. #safc

Long season if we defend like that! #SAFC

Not a single leader on that pitch, towel thrown in at 0-1, disgusting professionalism. Regardless of score, you still run & close down #safc

Dont know much about Ndong but £14m on a holding mid when they have Kirchoff/Rodwell/Cattermole to do it? Massive Moyes mistakes. #MNF #safc

We have no creativity whatsoever in the team. It’s appalling #safc

Can’t actually quite believe how we looked so much like a team in May and now, well, can’t explain it #safc #shite #clueless

Absolute garbage, djilibodji all over the place…too deep, charging out. Shite. Watmore isn’t good enough, no options at all up front #safc

Everton are a good side but we’ve been so weak here #safc

What a waste of an evening. #SAFC

And there’s another game that Rodwell has started and we haven’t won 🙄 #safc #RodwellCurse
