Robbie Keane is set to retire from international football for the Republic of Ireland after a glittering career.

The 36-year-old has made a national record 145 appearances for his home country since debuting against the Czech Republic in March 1998.

As it stands, the LA Galaxy talisman is the highest active international goalscorer with 67, since the retirement of Miroslav Klose in 2014.

An announcement has not been officially made, however, Ireland manager Martin O’Neill has indicated that Keane will not be available for the World Cup qualification campaign – which begins with an away trip to Belgrade to face Serbia on September 5.

“Robbie will make an announcement pretty soon. I’ll leave it to him. He has some time left with LA Galaxy and it might be a case of concentrating on that so I’ll let him speak.” O’Neill said.

Keane was ever present in the Premier League for over a decade, turning out for seven different clubs and will be fondly remembered for his achievements at Tottenham Hotspur, where he scored 122 goals in 303 appearances across all competitions.

It is yet to be known whether he will make a farewell appearance in Ireland’s friendly encounter against Oman on August 31st at the AVIVA Stadium in Dublin.
