After a disastrous first campaign in charge at Newcastle United, Steve McClaren is facing the axe within days claim reports from The Guardian.

Following the Magpies’ 3-1 loss to Bournemouth at St. James’ Park the club board, excluding owner Mike Ashley, gathered together for crisis talks.

The meeting, chaired by Managing Director Lee Charnley, met on Monday with the future of McClaren the only agenda on the table.

Newcastle currently sit in 19th place on the table, with a match against league-leaders Leicester their next assignment.

Although missing from the meeting, Mike Ashley will have the final say on whether McClaren stays or goes and who indeed would come in to replace the former England Manager.

McClaren returned to the Premier League following an exciting spell at Derby County, which saw the Rams almost reach the pinnacle of the English game.

Possible replacements for the Toon include former Liverpool bosses Rafa Benitez and Brendan Rogers, as well as former Manchester United and Everton trainer David Moyes.

With so little time remaining in the Premier League season, Ashley and company will need to make a decision fast, as the ramifications of relegation this season are the worst they have been in the league’s history.

The potential of missing out on the new £5.14 billion TV deal would mean the gap between promotion candidates and those currently in the league would escalate.

The decision on McClaren’s future is predicted to be decided before the Magpies face the Foxes on March 14.
