Stand-in Melbourne Victory skipper Leigh Broxham says the likely absence of active fans at Saturday night’s top-of-the-table clash against the Wanderers in Parramatta would not affect his players.

Broxham said Victory are capable of playing in any circumstance but hopes the fans do attend the match.

“If you ask a Western Sydney player if that’ll affect the way they play, they’ll say no,” Broxham said.

“I think we can play in any circumstances … hopefully this week the fans are there because we’re (Victory and Western Sydney) both well supported and active supporters are fantastic for both teams.”

Broxham said he believed the fan boycotts would help to grow the game in the long-run, despite its much publicised issues.

“The game’s growing, obviously there’s a few issues at the moment but they’ll get worked out. Sometimes it takes these things to move forward.”

On the field, Victory captain Carl Valeri has been a notable absentee in recent weeks and was again missing in action at training ahead of Saturday’s match. He continues to be struck down with a virus according to Broxham but the utility man gave Valeri every chance to take the field against the Wanderers.

“He’s got a virus at the moment, he’s not well.”

“But I think he’s coming good, he missed last week but that was sort of last minute. Hopefully he’s back for Saturday because he’s important to us.”
