Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane has revealed he knocked back an approach to link up with former manager Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford.

Varane was reportedly sought after by the former Real Madrid boss, but 23-year-old says his relationship with Zinedine Zidane was a big factor in his decision to remain with the European champions.

“Of course it’s flattering. Manchester United are a very big club. But from the moment when Madrid and I are in sync on my project, there’s no questions to ask yourself,’ Varane told Canal+.

“I have always said I feel good in Madrid. It’s not easy to say no to Jose Mourinho, but you have to weigh up the pros and the cons.

“We’re men, we have decisions to make and that’s how it is.”

Zidane played a big role in bringing the centre half to the club back in 2011 and he has been rewarded with Varane’s loyalty to the Spanish giants.

“It was really that trust, that support which was important for me, and when I was reassured on that point, there was no question of it any more.
