Aston Villa

Brad Guzan – 5: A terrible ball out from the back allowed Willian and Chelsea in for the opening goal. Could not do much about the second that tumbled in after a deflection from his full back.

Alan Hutton – 6: Will unfortunately have to claim the own goal in the second-half but performed admirably otherwise, forcing Chelsea to attack primarily down the left. His final cross needed improvement though.

Micah Richards – 6.5: Continued his impressive return to the English Premier League. Did all he could to marshall the defence soundly throughout, but each mistake was made around him.

Joleon Lescott – 6: Could not do too much about Guzan’s catastrophic ball out from his line, yet he broke up several Chelsea forays into attack during the second-half.

Kieran Richardson – 5.5: Tried his hardest all afternoon, but was given a torrid time in patches by a Willian in sparkling form. Was replaced following consecutive fouls and a first-half yellow card.

Idrissa Gueye – 6: Went unnoticed for the majority of the 90 minutes which something that central defensive midfielders thrive on doing at times, able to do just enough to keep his side ticking over and competitive in the middle park.

Ashley Westwood – 6: Was apart of a cohesive defensive-midfield trio who worked until the end to keep Chelsea at bay.

Carles Gil – 6:Similar to Gueye and Westwood in the sense they each battled hard all day against a superior host side that was desperate to find some form.

Jordan Ayew – 5.5: Combined nicely with Rudy Gestede and appeared bright throughout the first-half before fading in the latter stages and eventually being substituted.

Jack Grealish – 6: Provided a handful of bright patches at different times but struggled with his final ball. Still, this was a performance free of fear from the English youngster before tiring, cautioned with a late foul on Azpilicueta.

Rudy Gestede 5.5: Had a brilliant opportunity midway through the first-half with a shot from seven-yards, unsure how it ended up over the bar. Was nearly anonymous otherwise though, but his favoured service was lacking today.

Substitutes

Jordan Amavi – 5: Replaced Kieran Richardson who was on a caution in the second-half. Nearly gifted Chelsea a third with a sloppy turnover.

Adama Traore – 6: The Barcelona product entered the game in the 67th minute for Ayew and contributed soundly.
