Football Federation Tasmania has announced a strategic partnership with Melbourne City FC to establish a pathway to develop players from the region.

In a statement released to the media earlier today, FFT says the venture will see genuine opportunities for Tasmanian talent to throw themselves into the spotlight of the national competition.

“This partnership will provide new opportunities both here and in Victoria for some of our best players, allowing them to work within one of the professional football environments in Australia at the City Football Academy,” said FFT President Sean Collins.

The A-League’s glamour franchise has previously looked to Tasmania for young prospects, with 16-year-old Nathan Atkinson signed to City’s NPL side for 2016, while Jeremy Walker recorded 16 senior appearances and Nick Morton and Will Abbott represented at youth level.

The club’s CEO Scott Munn envisions this cooperation generating benefits on both sides and for the game as a whole in the coming years.

“Melbourne City is firmly committed to growing the game in areas of Australia where there is no direct pathway for juniors and has been part of the club’s overall strategic vision for developing Australian junior football,” he said.

“This partnership aims to provide a genuine pathway for Tasmanian players, both male and female, to a professional club in the national competition,”

Melbourne City have begun discussions immediately with FFT to look at early opportunities to implement their plans.
