According to AAP, the MCG is the leading candidate to host the vital match on the road to Russia 2018, with the match scheduled a week after the AFL Grand Final and before the cricket season.
Competing for the hosting of the match is Sydney’s ANZ Stadium which holds 83,500, and FFA believe that a near capacity crowd at either venue is possible, even the MCG which has a capacity of over 100,000.
“The MCG would certainly be interested in hosting the match if the Victorian Government was successful in securing the event,” a Melbourne Cricket Club spokesperson told AAP.
“However the ground’s availability is subject to the release of the full summer cricket schedule and approval from Cricket Australia.”
