Manchester United have made a poor start to their Europa League campaign, losing 1-0 away to Feyenoord.

The visitors made a whopping eight changes to the team that lost the Manchester derby, which worked against Jose Mourinho’s men who lacked cohesion and zest in their play.

Neither side could break the deadlock in the first half, with the decisive breakthrough coming late on in the 79th minute.

Tonny Vilhena latched onto a fizzed cross from Nicolai Jorgenson to drive a low and powerful shot past a despairing David de Gea, despite Jorgenson clearly in an offside position during the buildup play.

Mourinho could not hide his frustration with the linesman who failed to flag for offside.

“Of course I’m not happy with the start,” he told the club’s official website. “I think in the second half of the game, in my opinion, we were always in control.

“We were trying to win and they were trying not to lose. We felt like they were collapsing a bit physically, they were in trouble and it was that moment in which we lost the game. It was double unlucky because it was a clear offside.”

United’s next game is away to Watford in an early lunchtime kickoff on Sunday.
