An underwhelming Socceroos were dealt a frustrating 2-0 defeat to Jordan at the Amman International Stadium overnight.

While Ange Postecoglou’s evolved Socceroos setup was expected to be too much for the hosts, it quickly became clear that nothing would be easy about this game, as the Australian attack was consistently shutdown just before a final pass could be played to a forward target.

They paid the price for failing to make the most of a good start, as Jordan were gifted a breakthrough just seconds into the second-half when Hamza Aldaradreh was brought down inside the box by Matthew Spiranovic. Following Abdel Fattah’s converted spot-kick, Al-Nashāmā drew back into a defensive shell which the Australians were unable to dent, although many observers will attribute this to the numerous and lengthy interruptions due to players going down on the field. Postecoglou’s men were only able to generate stuttering attacks even with the introduction of Tim Cahill. The result was sealed in the 84th minute, when Aldaradreh provided the close-range finish for a Jordan counter.

Here is how Socceroos fans reacted on Twitter after the upset result:
