Melbourne City let a two-goal lead slip at half time to lose 3-2 at home to Newcastle Jets, after the visitors played out an inspiring second half.

The first half was a complete domination by the home side, who carved out the best chances in the opening 45 minutes.

Aaron Mooy broke the deadlock on 12 minutes when he struck a fierce drive from 22 yards out that took a wicked deflection and left Mark Birighitti helpless.

If the first goal was fortuitous, the second was quite the opposite with Stefan Mauk making a wonderful run from inside his own half linking up with teammates, weaving his way through the Jets’ rearguard to round off the move with a neat deflected finish from close range.

After the break the visitors responded strongly and got their just reward through Ben Kantarovski on 57 minutes, who scored a well guided header for the Jets.

City then wasted some golden opportunities up the other end and were made to pay when substitute Wade Dekker was adjudged to have handle in the area.

The penalty was stroked home with aplomb by Milos Trifunovic, and moments later he rose high to head home David Carney’s pin-point free-kick to complete a remarkable second half turnaround.
