Manchester United were edging towards a fourth consecutive 0-0 draw for the first time in the club’s history and 23 years since they hadn’t scored in four matches.
Jesse Lingard’s beautiful first time volley pass across the box met the head of an onrushing Wayne Rooney who powered in a strong headed finish.
The under pressure striker’s goal moved him to joint-second on the club’s all-time goalscoring charts with Dennis Law.
It was a relieving moment for the United skipper and a side who have come under severe criticism in recent weeks.
