Tottenham Hotspur have made a poor start to their Champions League campaign, losing 2-1 against AS Monaco at Wembley.
Bernardo Silva opened the scoring after a quarter of an hour when he was allowed to drive at the Tottenham defence, open up the angle on his left foot and score a sublime curling effort into the far right-hand corner from 16 yards.
The visitors doubled their advantage on 31 minutes, courtesy of a defensive mishap from Ben Davies which allowed Thomas Lemar to lash the ball into the roof of the net from close range.
Spurs were given a lifeline on the stroke of half-time when Erik Lamela’s corner kick was powerfully headed in by Toby Alderweireld.
A frenetic second half saw Spurs dominate most of the territory yet they failed to translate this into clear-cut scoring opportunities, as Monaco defended resolutely and held on for a crucial three points.
